Remembrance Day: My Time in Afghanistan

Today is Remembrance Day it commemorates Canadians who died in service to Canada from the South African War to the current mission in Afghanistan. The timing is significant because Remembrance Day also commemorate the official end of World War I on 11th November 1918. The war officially ended "at the 11th hour (11am) of the 11th day of the 11th month" in 1918, when the Germans signed the Armistice to end hostilities. According to information on Veterans Affairs Canada’s website the first Remembrance Day was conducted in 1919 throughout the Commonwealth. It was originally called Armistice Day until 1931 when MP Allan Neill introduced a bill to hold Armistice Day on a fixed day - November 11. During the bill's introduction, it was decided the word "Remembrance" would be used instead of "Armistice."

Two minutes of silence is the least I can do to honour the memories of the brave men and women who serve in the military and pay the ultimate sacrifice for me to enjoy freedom and democracy. In 2011, I had the opportunity to work as the Deputy Project Director for the USAID Rural Finance and Cooperative Development (RUFCOD) in Afghanistan. This micro-finance project helped to deliver financial services in rural and insecure areas of Afghanistan. The project established a network of Afghan-owned and governed credit unions that were sharia-compliant based on Islamic finance principles. The management and financing products were adapted to the culturally and religiously conservative rural areas of Afghanistan.

During my time in Afghanistan, I was based in Kabul but I had the opportunity to travel across the entire country to places such as Mazar-i-Sharif in Balkh province, Helmand province, Uruzgan and Kandahar. My security was led and provided by former US special force military personnel, whom I considered to be some of the finest human beings I have had the opportunity to work with as part of my team. In Kandahar I had firsthand experience of the outstanding work of the Canadian military.

It was evident to me that more than thirty years of conflict had crippled Afghanistan’s development. It is one of the poorest countries in the world with more than a third of the population living in extreme poverty. The country lack basic infrastructure and sources of economic growth as well as opportunities for self-reliance. There is need for improvements in literacy, the strengthening of governance and civic institutions. Development efforts such as the RUFCOD project are constrained by insecurity, poor Afghan leadership and governance, and corruption. A deep wedge of mistrust between foreigners and Afghans also hindered the project’s implementation and success.

Despite the challenges, in Kandahar I had the opportunity to see the positive impact of the contribution of the Canadian Government to the stability and development of Afghanistan. It was also in Kandahar that I heard stories from appreciative local Afghans about the yeoman services of the Canadian military. The Canadian military was not only engaged in military operations, they were also engaged in nation building and development as part of the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team (KPRT). They were involved in providing assistance to local farmers to improve crop yields. The Canadian military not only ensured that distribution routes were relatively safe, they also contributed to improvement in marketing and distribution channels for farmers. Our military also supported the work of Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) to promote the importance of governance and education.

Today I remember the fine men and women of our military some of whom paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom and democracy I enjoy. In many cases our soldiers will remain nameless. They will not be identified so that they are protected from retribution and consequently, their harrowing stories will go untold and unrecognized.

Today I salute the  men and women in our military!

In Flanders Fields
by John McCrae
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands, we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Crisis Management for Inebriated Mayor and Dummies

Hello friends it is the end of the week and as much as my intention was to make it light today another video surfaced with an extremely inebriated Toronto Mayor Rob Ford. To be honest yesterday I thought about blogging about my favourite personalities of the week today. At the top my list was Mayor Rob Ford for finally having the courage to stand up and telling Toronto and the world that he smoked crack cocaine. Yes, he was at the top of my list. Despite his lengthy period of denials as human beings we all deserve second chances. Mayor Rod Ford, like George W. Bush is one those persons who you really want to love but he just keep on breaking your heart and sometimes all you want to do is just give him a slap in the back of his head for stupidity. Frankly, I believe that Mayor Rob Ford is now seriously incapacitated and it is therefore difficult to comprehend why he has not resigned.

There are other personalities that I wanted to blog about today one of whom is Michelle, my adorable and hardworking wife. Few days ago Michelle fell asleep on her train ride from Brampton into Toronto Union Station. According to Michelle’s Facebook status she suddenly woke up just before the train pulled into Union Station and she frantically started to search for her glasses. She was in a state of panic thinking that she had lost her spectacles which it turned out was still on her face. This was my pick for joke of the week.

Dear friends, the holiday season is fast approaching and there will be lots of partying and drinking. With the video released yesterday showing an extremely inebriated Mayor Rob Ford, as professionals you should take notes. The number one rule is don’t consume more alcohol than your limit. You can use some self-reminding methods to stop yourself. For example, you can ask a trusted friend or relative to remind you when you have reached your quota.

Today I am sharing a personal crisis management and communication plan for those professionals and dummies who will become extremely intoxicated and be drunken stupors like Mayor Rob Ford during the holiday season. Let me tell you friends it is extremely important to have a plan in place. As you can clearly see Mayor Rob Ford does not appear to have a crisis management and communication plan. It just seem that his crisis keep on escalating from bad to worse and now we have to believe he is cursed.

Here is my drunken stupor crisis management and communication plan.

Pre-drunken stupor
It is very important that you anticipate the possibility that you will become intoxicated from your alcohol consumption and plan ahead this holiday season. You can be proactive and prepare for being drunk with your Drunken Stupor Crisis Management and Communications team.

Let us be frank. Let us not fool ourselves. This is not rocket science. Here is the deal where ever you go today there are mobile devices with cameras and video recording capabilities. If you get drunk it is fair game to assume that you are going to get caught on camera. You must be prepared that even your closest relatives and friends are going to take your picture or record a video. Look at the Youtube video of Justin Bieber filmed sleeping by lady of the night. Remember even if your friends or relatives signed agreement to silence and handing over their phones those rules are tough to enforce. Please don’t fool yourself into believing it will not happen to you. Listen you look funny when you are drunk and acting stupidly...it makes others laugh and gives them damn good reason to laugh at your drunk ass.

My point here you don’t need intensive brainstorming sessions on all the potential crises that could occur when you get drunk. If you drink don’t drive. If you drink please have a designated driver or take a cab. Drunk drivers kill or get killed!

There are benefits to exploring the being drunk. For example, you may realize that getting drunk is preventable and you may decide to simply modify your behaviour and attitude towards alcohol consumption. You can begin to think about possible responses for the best case and worst case scenarios. Remember prevention is better than cure. It is better to think about these things in your pre-drunken stupor state than when you are inebriated and unable to respond to being drunk.

Identify Your Drunken Stupor Crisis Management and Communication Team
Here you need a team of trusted friends and relatives. Here is the deal your team have to be people who you respect. Remember one of the points I made earlier in the week that is a damaged leader hurt the entire team. Yesterday we saw a clear a sign of this when the Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty choked up speaking about his friend Mayor Rob Ford. Being a drunken stupor this holiday season will hurt your career and it will hurt the people around you. It will hurt your career!

As it is silly season for partying and drinking a prudent philosophy is to trust only you. At 46 years old, I know too well how many of my friends told me they would not be drinking at a party and in the end they drink themselves into obliviousness. If you have not watched the movie The Hangover, you should watch it right now! You will not want to have people on your team who are going to wake up from a night of partying with no memory of the previous night and they don’t know where you are or they can account for you. You definitely don’t want them driving around Toronto searching for you or calling your boss or your wife to ask about your whereabouts.

Let us be clear, you will need a team. Make sure your team consist of people who are not intimated by you. You need people are will be prepared and willing to overrule you. You need people who are willing to go to the bartender to demand that you are not served any more alcohol. In building your team please ensure you have people who you respect and people who you will listen to in time of your drunkenness. You will need a spokesperson as well as a back-up. These have to be people who are pre-screened, trained and have clear instruction on different channels of communications including speaking your spouses, etc.

You will need to have a system for notification. Who are the people who need to know that you are inebriated? When do they need to be notified? Why do they need to know?

Arising out of your pre-drunken stupor planning you should develop holding statement for when your drunken stupor crisis breaks. You need to have a holding statement for different people including your firm’s board and senior management, the media, etc

Post-Drunken Stupor Crisis
Darn you were extremely inebriated at your office party. Consult with your team to determine the extent of your crisis. Did you dance naked? Did you puke in CEO’s plate? These things happen. You should be prepared for the embarrassing news and Youtube videos. You are going to get hurt and you would have hurt others in the process. Despite how difficult will be for you must remain calm and remember that you cannot act without adequate information on your state of drunkenness. Sober up quickly and face the music. Humble yourself. Accept the fact that you made an ass of yourself. You should consult with your Drunken Stupor Crisis Management and Communication Team. The team should be receiving information and ensuring that the right information is being provided to you so that you can determine an appropriate response.

You have to assess your situation. It is imperative that you develop your statement once you have assessed the situation and the full outbreak of drunken stupor crisis is known. As professionals you should be prepared for the worst case. Some firms will fire you!

Ditch the Darn Wheel of Fortune

Hello Friends, I trust that your week has been fruitful and that today you will have a wonderful day. I have a busy day ahead. Late yesterday I received an invitation to tender for a project in the Middle East. Today I will be working diligently on the project proposal because I have an extremely short deadline for its submission. Today I am also meeting with a team of youth leaders in Brampton, Ontario to discuss my Leader Leave Legacy Workshop for High School and College Students.

I am thrilled by your continued support for reading my blog and your encouragement. On Tuesday one of my friends sent me this wonderful email message “My brother I am in a cab in Montreal and I just got the chance to read your blog. Thanks for everything you are and have been to me over the years. But most of all thanks for being the presence of God among your friends. One love!”

I am deeply honoured to be viewed as being the presence of God among my friends but the truth my primary goal is to use my experiences and stories to inspire others.

Today I want you to ditch the darn Wheel of Fortune. The Wheel of Fortune is an American television game show created by Merv Griffin in which contestants solve word puzzles to win cash and prizes determined by spinning a giant carnival wheel. Please ditch the wheel of fortune because you are not going to win a darn thing! And while you are ditching the wheel of fortune please work damn hard and be prepared to work damn hard for a very awful long time.

To be blunt there is no wheel of fortune! I discovered that a very long time ago. Along my journey I have read a number of books on wealthy and fortune. I read “The Richest Man in Babylon” by George Samuel Clason which dispenses financial advice through a collection of parables set in ancient Babylon. I also read “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert T. Kiyosaki which advocates financial independence and building wealth through investing, real estate investing, starting and owning businesses, as well as increasing one's financial intelligence. I have read “The Wealthy Barber” by David Chilton which looks at personal finance.
Reading those books help to give me perspective. From my own experience I know that the wheel of fortune for success is an embodiment of determination, hard work, focus, diligence and consistency. Last night Michelle and I had an interesting conversation as we drove home from the Brampton GO Station. We concluded that while wealth and success has a number prerequisites and decisive steps which are well established they are marred with difficulties and challenges. Consequently, only those who persist and endure ultimately reap the fruits of their efforts and success.

Michelle and I are working class family backgrounds in Jamaica. My mother worked her entire life as a civil servant until she became terminally ill and retired with a meagre pension. Her illness took me to precipice of bankruptcy with a bill from Credit Valley Hospital. She died in 2009. My father worked as a motor vehicle mechanic hammering old iron and rusty screws. At 76 years old, he has absolutely no pension and relies on his children for financial support. Michelle’s mom, as single mother worked her entire life in a factory until she retired. Today she spends the harsh winter in Jamaica and the rest of the time with Canada taking caring of Marisa. And like royal icing as the price we pay (or is reward?) for our ambition and determination Michelle and I are supporting adult children in their post-secondary training.

From our experience we know there is no wheel of fortune. The wheel of fortune for success is an embodiment of determination, hard work, focus, diligence and consistency. Michelle and I are champions of our own path. We understand what is important and how to prioritize in order to achieve our goals. We know what it is to face uncertainty and refuses to believe in the existence of a wheel of fortune.

As an entrepreneur I know I am my best advocate. I rely on my internal GPS and embrace uncertainty as part of my journey. I am thrilled by my efforts to create a successful small business that will one day be a part of my legacy. It is challenging but it energizes me. The disappointments are sobering in a positive way and offer excellent learning opportunities and lessons. I take pride in being responsible for my own endeavor, my successes and failures. All of this keeps me sharply focus on reality and my wheel of fortune for success. Michelle, who is the epitome of the strength of a woman, and I are not constricted by the structure of what constituted success and failure. We continue to churn and grind our wheel of fortune for success.

Ditch the darn wheel of fortune and create a wheel of fortune for success!

Do you have a wheel of fortune? Are you creating your own wheel of fortune for success?
Have a great day!

101 Leadership Lessons from a Drunken Stupor

What a day it was in the City of Toronto yesterday?

Yesterday was the day the City of Toronto gained the world’s media attention for all the wrong reasons. On social media I called it a Day of Shame for the City of Toronto. Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has admitted that he used crack cocaine while in office in one of his drunken stupors. As student of leadership I believe the saga of Toronto’s Mayor Rob Ford offers us a number of important lessons on leadership. If you are looking to enhance your career or aspiring for leadership roles you should take notes from the Rob Ford saga.

Trustworthy
A leader must be trustworthy. A leader must operate with integrity and fundamental ethical behaviour and values. We may follow a leader who lacks a clear vision, plan or goals as long as we are confident he or she is working to develop or refine these key requirements of leadership. However, the minute we determine we are unable to trust a leader we will be cautious with our support. As the mayor of Canada’s largest city, Rob Ford has created a trust deficit and as long as he remains mayor his focus will be to re-establish the trust with the people of the City of Toronto. Creativity, hopefulness trust and honesty are attributes of effective leadership but honesty and trust are perhaps the key.

Communicate frequently and with precision
A key success factor for leaders is effective communication. Leaders must communicate frequently and with precision to promote transparency and openness. Mr. Ford was far from being transparent and opened when news of a video allegedly showing him smoking crack cocaine first surfaced earlier in the year.

A leader that wants to be taken seriously must lead with a steady hand and calming voice. Mayor Rob Ford is clearly not the best or most effective communicator. For want of better word Mr. Ford lacks stage presence. When facing the media whether it is to answer questions on his support for transit or his use of crack cocaine he sometimes loses his cool. Leaders must be patient. A leader must take time to explain complex actions in a simple manner. For an official to face the public to admit the use of drugs it is not an easy task. It takes courage and guts. However as difficult as it may be, Rob Ford need to explain his abnormal behaviour in a manner that will make the public understand.

He should speak bluntly about his behaviour without offending others such other city councillors, the police, business leaders and the general public including the media. By speaking bluntly he can open a window for descending views and allow room for dialogue and discourse. He should have a polite and open discussion on why he will not seek a leave of absence or resigned as mayor. I think this approach would please those who may disagreed or oppose Mr. Ford as well as it will please his supporters who are looking for clarity. The public is yearning to understanding Mr. Ford’s motivation for smoking crack cocaine. He clearly enjoys grass root support in Ford Nation and if he speaks bluntly and honestly may be able to commence the healing process.

Aura that displays confidence
Strong leaders are decisive and courageous and display an aura of confidence. They display a sense of conviction to implement what they believe is the right thing, when they could have taken the easy or popular way out. This makes people respect and trust them even if they disagree. Mr. Ford is clearly not the most confident leader I have seen on displayed particularly during a state of crisis even if it is a personal crisis. Mr. Ford aura conveys a bit of vulnerability that let him appear like the average Joe Public and it is perhaps this visible vulnerability that drives his popularity.

Performance
Performance is a key success factor for a leader. No one should think that the job of politician is an easy one. It is devilishly difficult, requiring dedication, diligence, discipline and devotion as well as effort demanded by few other pursuits. Throughout the unfolding of the saga surrounding Mayor Rob Ford, he is constantly reminding Torontonians that he is protecting taxpayers and saving taxpayers money. He constantly refers to his deep love for the City of Toronto and its people. An outstanding leader is a person who willing to serve and fulfill the interests of others above and beyond personal interests. It is unclear to me whether Mr. Ford is putting his personal interest such as his love for the city and deep rooted belief that he is only one capable for ruling Toronto as mayor at this time ahead of true interest of the citizens of Toronto. As this is Canada, a country rooted in freedom and democracy no one would like to think we are capable of having a city being led by a leader might be sliding towards despotic behaviour.

Yesterday as I listened to various call-in programs on radio and television I was amazed by the number of people that said the mayor should be given a second chance. Numerous callers said the mayor was doing a good job and that his work has not been affected by his use of alcohol or crack cocaine. During the summer I was at a barbecue and I overheard two ladies speaking about Rob Ford. They said that the elites in Toronto are trying to get rid of Mayor Rob Ford but they can’t because he is doing a good job. They said he is only one in Toronto helping poor people by creating jobs for inner city youths and address the dilapidated conditions in the city’s community housing. The bottom line is as the Ford saga is unfolding his job performance is clearly not an issue.

Build a team
One of the hallmarks of strong leaders is that they always surround themselves with a strong support team. Clearly Mr. Ford’s trust deficit does not and is not likely to inspire loyalty and make city councillors and others feel confident in his leadership. They are more likely now to be less relaxed and may see the need to be more protective and even combative. Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair for example is unlikely to have any confidence in the mayor. The Chief is on record as saying he is ashamed the evidence uncovered relating to the mayor’s behaviour as a public servant.

An important point not be overlooked when speak of leadership and the importance fostering an effective team is that a damaged leader hurts the entire team. Doug Ford’s reputation is also intimately tied to the mayor’s demise. As mayor’s brother and strongest supporter was he aware of the mayor’s behaviour?

In the Ford saga there are some unanswered questions which in my view are likely to hurt Toronto Police Chief and the Toronto Police’s reputation. Given the extensive police surveillance techniques and the abundance of evidence I would have expected that if it was anyone else the police would have charged and arrested the suspect. Therefore there are a number of unanswered questions. For example, why was the mayor not arrested and charged? Are politicians treated differently than other citizens by law enforcement? Is the police serving as proxies for Mr. Ford’s political opponents? No matter what the answers are to these questions, a damaged leader such as Mr. Rob Ford hurts the entire team and in this case there is some damages done to the Police Chief and his investigators.

A damaged leader hurts the team and the organisation or establishment.

5 Beautiful Brilliant Benefits of Bright Words

“Words can break someone into a million pieces, but they can also put them back together. I hope you use yours for good, because the only words you'll regret more than the ones left unsaid are the ones you use to intentionally hurt someone.” ― Taylor Swift

Hello friends we made it through Monday and we are going to make it through today.

My friend Marc Samodee wrote me this email about my blog “Mark, great job with your blog – McKenzie's Voice! I had a chance to read it today. I will be reading your blog more frequently. It is great to know you enjoy blogging. I feel you have lots of life experience and personal ideas you can share that others can benefit from.”

Buoyed by Marc’s email I would like to share with you my 5 beautiful brilliant benefits of bright words. There is a proverb with the saying that “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” That is not true! Words can destroy us! Just look around at the children who are suffering from bullying and you will see the consequences of hurtful words or actions.

I am personally encouraged by the positive comments I received from you and others. I recognize the importance of positive words. I wake up every day with a positive attitude and positive thoughts. I am an optimist. Being an optimist does not meaning I have a perfect life. Like you I am confronted by the daily challenges of life but rather than seeing the glass as half-empty I see it as half-full. I use positive words to keep myself motivated and to inspire others around me. My basic philosophy is not to ignore the reality of life on a silver cloud but rather to focus on my belief in my abilities to be successful and to have a positive approach to the challenges I encounter and to endeavour to make the most of my situation.

Armed with positive words and a positive attitude I am able to make it through each day with a positive vibes! My friend Warren will tell you that I am like electricity. He will tell you that no matter how sorry your story I will always find something positive to say to you aimed at uplifting your spirit once I have listened to you. My two adult children, Marchelle and Malcolm, adore me for my positive attitude and use of positive words. They tell me I make them believe in themselves.

Let me share a story with you one of my friends told me about her childhood. When she was five years old she was hit by a car and almost died. Before the accident she was a fast learner and that made her father very proud. However, after the accident, her father seemingly heartbroken by the accident lashed out with comments that the accident had destroyed his child and that she could not do better because she was intellectually disabled. She said her father’s words damaged her as a child.

She said that when she I was 21 years old her father sat her down and told her she was a virtuous woman. Those words were positive and powerful and said those beautiful brilliant bright words liberated her. Prior to that day she thought of herself as intellectually disabled and incapable offering the world or achieving anything successful. Her self-esteem and self-confidence were low. She was uninspired and lacks motivation. She said that at the beginning of her adult life, her father breathed life back into her with his positive words.
Through my life I have come to acknowledge 5 beautiful brilliant benefits of bright words. They are:

  1. Positive words inspire and motivate us so that we can better cope with the challenges of life.
  2. Positive words strengthen us physically and emotionally thus making us more resilient
  3. Positive words help us believe in ourselves by boosting our self-esteem and self-confidence
  4. Positive words help you us attract positive people and boost our relationships with others
  5. Positive words convey a positive impression of each of us which is key to our successes

If you ever doubt how I am able to wake up each day with a positive attitude and thinking positive words allow me to share an open secret. My life is not perfect and very far from it! Like you I am confronted by challenges but here is how I manage to stay positive and thinking positive words and reap the beautiful brilliant benefits of bright words.

I draw my inspiration from your positive encouragement. I am also inspired by others. For example, I am inspired by the young remarkable 16 year old Olivia Wise who is battling brain cancer. I see her as an inspiration. Before her cover of Katy Perry’s Roar and I barely knew who Katy Perry was….yes, my challenges forces me into some kind of dark ages where I am truly unable to keep up with the who is who of celebrities. However, I am not entirely out of touch that I miss the sweet uplifting melody of Olivia Wise when she said “I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar.” Those are truly positive and uplifting words coming.

I did not miss Katy Perry’s beautiful brilliant bright words of encouragement to Olivia Wise because I am the bottom of a dark pit drowning in my challenges and sorrows. Katy Perry said to Olivia:

‘I love you and a lot of people love you, and that’s why your video got to me and moved everybody that saw it. So I just wanted to send you some love and some light and tell you that I’m thinking about you. Thank you so much. Keep roaring.’

Let us today send some love to Olivia Wise and whatever your circumstances today please keep roaring like Olivia Wise!

How have you benefited from positive words? How have you used positive words to encourage others?

Don’t Fear Cannibalization, See it as Opportunities

Hello Friends I trust that you had a wonderful weekend and you will have a great week. I would also like to extend my deepest sympathies to the families and friends of TSA officer, Gerardo Hernandez and all those who were affected by the incomprehensible shooting at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Friday.

I had a relatively quiet weekend. On Saturday I spent most of the day with Marisa. I took her dancing in the morning. Later in the day we played Monopoly and Hedbanz as well as we did arts and craft while my wife went grocery shopping. Sunday morning I gave my wife coffee in bed before escaping to a quiet corner to write my blog and plan my week. We had pancakes for breakfast. The real treat at breakfast for Michelle, Marisa and I Sunday morning was seeing two deer racing across the lot near the back of our house, and one of the deer stopping to look in our direction as if it could sense how excited we were to see it.

My blog today is about cannibalization. I notice recently that my newer blog postings are cannibalizing my older postings. Over the past two weeks I noticed a decline in the number of views on some my older blog postings. I think the cannibalization of my older postings may be a signal of my ability to find interesting topics to blog about daily. Cannibalization is a term used in marketing to describe the decreased demand for an existing product that occurs when a firm releases a new and similar product.

I don’t fear cannibalization of my older postings. I see cannibalization as an opportunity as it forces me to be creative and innovative. According to John Paczkowski of www.allthingsd.com Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook said that it is “better to eat your own than have your own eaten by others.” Tim Cook sees cannibalization as a huge opportunity for Apple and Apple’s core philosophy is to never fear cannibalization because if Apple doesn’t do it, someone else will.

As a relatively new daily blogger I share Apple’s philosophy on product cannibalization. For me daily blogging is a hobby. I am passionate about blogging daily. I look forward to sharing my ideas and thoughts with you. It is the vehicle through which I participate in your dreams and cheer you on your path to success.

I am learning how the Internet works by blogging daily and unraveling some of the key success factors for successful businesses on the Internet. In an article titled “Twitter Founder Reveals Secret Formula for Getting Rich Online” by Ryan Tate on www.wired.com Evan Williams is reported to have told tech heads at the recent XOXO conference in Portland, Oregon that he figured out the internet. As Evan Williams suggested creativity and innovation is key but it is not about running around trying to do something no one else has ever done. The real trick is to find something that’s tried and true — and to do it better.

As a daily blogger one of the challenges I face is the risk of getting lost in the maze of cyber world and the abundant of information that is available to you as readers. To mitigate this risk I am forced to be creative and innovative in my ideas for topics to blog on and my key messages. I am learning to use the uncertainty surrounding the mechanics of the Internet as an advantage. I invest time in coming up my topics so that they serve as key attention grabbers. Once I come up with my topic or message for each blog I then challenge myself to present my content in such a way that you can relate to and appreciate it. Consequently, I don’t fear cannibalization of my older postings. I see cannibalization as an opportunity.

The truth is when I started blogging daily in September I did not truly understand how the Internet works. However, by taking action I am learning some important lessons including the reasons why my daily postings cannibalize my older blog postings. As an entrepreneur I am accustom to trying disconnected paths and hope that one day all of my experiences and dots will connect just as the late Steve Job said in his 2005 Stanford commencement speech. Ultimately I know I will yield something truly successful and great by blogging daily.

Don’t fear cannibalization of your ideas, see it as opportunities.

I would love to hear from you. Should I fear cannibalization of my blog postings? Are your ideas cannibalizing each other?

No Need for Olivia Pope in Robert Ford’s Scandal

Hello Friends, thanks for your continued support. You will notice I made some changes to blog page to ensure that you and I can stay fully engage. I am truly inspired on this journey by your encouragement. Yesterday I received an email from the amazing Lynn Rabey, the former Lieutenant Governor for Marketing for Toastmasters International District 86 with a note that read “Mark you are a great leader.” Mark Young, the immediate past president of the Antigua Toastmasters Club also sent me a Facebook message saying “Mark you are committed and talented to able to find and put words together that others can relate to and appreciate.”

I am my enjoying my journey of  blogging daily. I am doing it because of you. You are very important to me. I want to be your cheer leader in pursuit of your dreams, successes and happiness.

I hope you had a great time “trick n treating” with your children for Halloween last night. I had an absolutely fabulous time in the rain with Marisa. I never saw any rolling calves or blackheart men but I know they are out there somewhere. Marisa had one horrific scare when saw a massive scary black spider that decorated one of the neighbour’s door way. We had a great time but I was happy when Marisa told me she was tired and it was time for us go home!

It seems Toronto’s Mayor Rob Ford does not need Olivia Pope or someone like Alicia Florrick to save him from his latest scandal. Olivia Pope is the main character in the American political thriller television series Scandal created by Shonda Rhimes starring Kerry Washington on ABC. It is no secret Rob Ford seem to be like everyone else (especially politicians) who has a secret. Yesterday Toronto police Chief Bill Blair revealed his force is in possession of a video that allegedly shows Ford smoking crack cocaine. Kevin Donovan and Robyn Doolittle, the Toronto Star reporters must be feeling vindicated with the Toronto police chief’s announcement of evidence gathered confirming the existence of a video with Mayor Rob Ford allegedly smoking crack cocaine.

In the TV show Scandal Olivia Pope fiercely protect and defend the public images of Washington’s elites ensuring that their dirty secrets do not make it into the public domain. For the record I only started watching Scandal this season. On the other hand I have been a big fan of The Good Wife which is a legal and political drama on CBS created by Robert King and Michelle King. Julianna Margulies plays Alicia Florrick the titular character on the The Good Wife.

In Rob Ford’s latest scandal he clearly does not need someone like Oliver Pope or Alicia Florrick to protect and defend his image. This is a particularly so as since the police chief made it clear no charges will made against Rob Ford. It is a case that the police botched their investigation?

The extend of the Toronto Police’s surveillance of Alexander Lisi, an occasional driver and an associates of Rob Ford, might turn out to be a whole different scandal by itself. The Toronto police evidence of Rob Ford might be as scandalous as it gets for the allegations of the mayor’s indiscretions and denigration of moral and ethical behaviour for someone holding public office.

As an anti-money laundering expert knowledgeable in financial institutions’ treat assessment and risk management I can only speculate based on the Toronto police’s sophisticated surveillance technique that the subject of their investigation might be linked to organised crime. If I am correct this undoubtedly cannot be good news for Mayor Rob Ford. I can only speculate that the techniques used were based on the treat and risk to public safety and security.

Why did the Toronto police use such sophisticated surveillance techniques such as vehicle tracking devices, phone logs that detailed hundreds of incoming and outgoing calls? According to the 474 page affidavit the police employed what they call “static surveillance,” a term used to describe basic, in-person observations, usually from the vantage of a car or a rented house. This is seem much like an expensive surveillance operations. The Toronto police have footage of Mr. Lisi and Mr. Ford captured on store security cameras. According to Det.-Constable Khoshbooi the Toronto police also took to the air and watched from the force’s plane.

Just few weeks ago the Toronto police’s plane was pretty much a scandal of its own. The plane civilian-marked Cessna is apparently stealthily owned by Toronto Police since no one will confirm or deny that Toronto Police own. According to a Toronto Star report the plane carries a 17-kg Wescam MX-10 imaging system on its wing which can be converted easily to use a nighttime lens. It has the capability to look down and see where someone purchased their cup of coffee or look in a window of a condominium building from two kilometres away. But Toronto Police will not even acknowledge having the plane which Transport Canada documents show they do. Police have had the $500,000 plane since 2004 and high powered cameras, sources say, were upgraded in 2010 at a cost that could get as high as double of what the plane is worth.

For me reading about Toronto Rob Ford is like a good episode of the ABC TV show Scandal or CBS The Good Wife. There is never a dull moment in Ford Nation.

I think Mayor Rob Ford does not need Olivia Pope from Scandal or Alicia Florrick from The Good Wife.

What do you think?

TGIF…Have a fantastic weekend.
